Elections and By-Elections in OXWAB

Oxfordshire County Council

Oxfordshire County Council is re-elected every 4 years with by-elections being called when councillors leave their post. The last election was June 2009.

There are 74 county councillors representing 57 divisions. 10 Liberal Democrats were elected (4 of them from OXWAB). The Liberal Democrats form the opposition.

European Parliament elections

There were also elections to the European Parliament on 4th June. Oxfordshire is in the South East region, which elects ten MEPs. Members of the European Parliament (MEP) are elected every 5 years. There is a different voting system for European elections than for local or Westminster elections - you have one vote for a party list and they are then added up and allocated proportionally. The South East has elected 2 Lib Dem MEPs out of the 10 (the others are 4 Conservatives, 2 UKIP, 1 Labour and 1 Green).

District Councils in OXWAB

The District Councils in Oxfordshire have different re-election schedules.

Oxford City re-elects half of its councillors every 2 years. Each City Ward has two councillors, each councillor serves a 4 year term. The next election is May 2010.

Cherwell District re-elects every one third of the councillors every year for three years and then has a year long break when the county elections take place. The next elections will take place in 2010.

Vale of White Horse District re-elects once every 4 years. The last time was in May 2007 and the next elections will be 2011.

By-elections are called when a sitting councillor leaves.

Westminster

Members of Parliament (MP) are elected during a General Election or if a By-Election is called. The last General Election was in May 2005.
